George Martinez

Picture
In 2006 we hosted George Martinez, a rapper and inspiring speaker, to come to Dillingham and spend the day with us. He taught us that we should stand up for what we believe in and try to make our communities what we want them to be and that our young voices matter. It was a lot of fun. We also got to do graffiti art, dance and rap.

Election day Propostition 4

Picture
On election day proposition 4 we all made signs to encourage people to vote for Proposition 4. The signs had things like, "Dont go home until you vote, honk if you voted yes and vote yes on 4"
we stood out on the corner for 3 or 4 hours; the next day, the vote won in Dillingham and lost across the state.

Now we give leadership Trainings

In the past couple years we go out and do leadership trainings to help other kids from their own personal, social and enviromental action goals. We do 2 day trainings 1 day trainings 1/2 day trainings and 90 minute seminars.
We spent the day in New Stuyahok, and we did presentations at Lead On in Girdwood, and AFN. We are planing to go to Igiagis and Koliganek this spring. The Alaska Forum on the Environment in 2009, 2010, and 2011, and AYEA presentations.

Nushtival

Picture
That same summer Nunamta Alukestai, a group of Native tribes in our region, sponsored the Nushtival, an anti-Pebble Mine rally. Two of the rebels to the pebble and Ms. McLinn all gave speaches at that rally. The LAYC group helped set up the event, serve food and clean up all day long.

nushtival 2009

Picture
We were abel to participate in the Nushtival last summer as well. Hayden Johansen spoke at the Nushtival Rally in July: "Stopping the Pebble Mine is dead serious to us. We are struggling to prevent the annihilationof our culture. To knowingly eliminate the existence of an ethnic group called genocide. Killing a culture with guns, gas chambers, starvation, denying basic rights to life  and liberty; how it is done doesn't matter- If we knowingly kill a culture, through the development of a mine- it is genocide. We want to prevent the Cultural Genocide of our people- and we will."

We also participated at the Nushtival in the summer of 2010

Nushtival 2011

The rebels were able to participate in the Nushtival this year, We set up a tent filled with information about the pebble mine and a petition to sign for every one that walked through.
