Details: This mine first began as a small underground mine, but ended being the biggest mine in North America! It is so big that the original town it was located by had to move. It took two years to move all the 185 houses and 20 business.

Berkeley Pit

AKA: The Deadliest Mine (in North America)
Details: This mine got so exhausted after 30 years it was no longer profitable, so it was abandoned. They took out the water pipes and pumps so every time it rained, or ground water got into the pit it wouldn't have anyway to get out. The water mixing with all the toxic wastes made it as acidic as a lemon. Now NO fish, NO plants, and NO insects live in this area. There are only a few types of microorganisms that survive in the toxic water.
