Hull rust mine

Location:Hibbing Minnesota
Dimensions:5mi. long; 2mi. wide; 535ft. deep;
AKA: The Biggest mine (in North America)
Details: This mine first began as a small underground mine, but ended being the biggest mine in North America! It is so big that the  original  town it was located by had to move. It took two years to move all the 185 houses and 20 business.
minerals extracted:
-700 million tons of iron 
-530 million tons of waste
-700 million tons of iron ore was extracted

Berkeley Pit

Dimensions:1.5mi. wide 1/3+ mi deep
AKA: The Deadliest Mine (in North America)
Details: This mine got so exhausted after 30 years it was no longer profitable, so it was abandoned. They took out the water pipes and pumps so every time it rained, or ground water got into the pit it wouldn't have anyway to get out. The water mixing with all the toxic wastes made it as acidic as a lemon. Now NO fish, NO plants, and NO insects live in this area. There are only a few types of microorganisms that survive in the toxic water.

minerals extracted:
-180 tons of copper a month (for 30 years)

Bingham Canyon Mine

Dimensions:2.7mi. across; 0.75mi. deep;
AKA: The Deepest Mine (in North America)
Details: This mine produced more copper than ANY other mine in history, there was approximately 14.5million tons of copper extracted. If this open pit was a stadium it would be able to seat 9 million people.

-620 tons of gold 
-276 tons of molybdenum
-14.5 million tons copper
 

Proposed Pebble Mine

Location:headwaters of Bristol Bay near Lake Illiamna and Lake Clark
Dimensions:20 sq. mi. of land will be destroyed it will be approximatly 3mi. long and 1.5mi. deep
AKA:It would be North Americas largest gold/copper mine
Details:This mine is a proposed gold and copper mine that would be located at the headwaters of Bristol Bay, home to the worlds largest salmon run.
